I was always under the impression that all apples were great for cooking, baking and eating raw. It never occurred to me that one was better for cooking than the other-however science (and the internet) begged to differ! With the season’s changing, and the holiday potluck parties about to start, the pressure to make the best dish is on. So it’s time to figure out which type of apple is better for cooking, and which one is better for baking?
A little fun fact: there are over 2,500 different varities of apples grown in the United States alone, and over 7,500 consumed all over the world. Now if you’re more of a visual learner, like me, you’ll appreciate the clever visual guide that the blog Epicurious has put together of the most popular types of apples that you can find in your local grocery store, easier to match!
To keep things simple, and on the shorter side, here are the 7 popular apples you can find at your local grocery store and I’ve labeled each apple according to 3 categories: cooking, baking or eating raw.
- Cooking could mean anything from making homemade apple sauce, apple butter, or even adding the apples to porkchops
- Baking- would mean anything from traditional pies, to cobblers, to tortes and apple strudel
- Eating raw — wash apple, put in hand, consume.
And without further ado..
Golden Delicious: Cooking, Baking
Braeburn: Cooking, Baking
McIntosh: Cooking
Fuji: Cooking
Cortland: Baking
Gala: Eaten Raw
Red Delicious: Eaten Raw
I’m no pie baking connoisseur like The Food Lab, but I do agree with their analysis that one should use Braeburn and Golden Delicious apples to make the best apple-y tasting apple pie.
Along with eating the fruit themselves, apple picking is also a fairly popular fall activity that tends to peak between August and October for a specific reason: that’s when the apples turn ripe. It’s important to always eat the fruits when they are in season, otherwise you never know how old or for how long that apple has been in the refrigerators of your local grocery store.
Now, go forth and pick all the apples! And if you’ve picked more than you could possibly eat, try these recipes.
