Sometimes the spice rack can look so daunting - how much of which, where? Do I own a quarter teaspoon?
The packaged spice blends at the grocery store are tempting - but if you’ve ever checked out the labels, you may have found some surprising ingredients: Sugar? MSG? Partially hydrogenated oils? No thank you!
Luckily, making your own spice blends at home is actually quite easy - you can control the ingredients, and it saves you money! It’s time to brave your spice rack and create some DIY blends that are sure to jazz up your next meal. These three simple blends are versatile and delicious!
Taco Seasoning
No more running to the store for a packet of Taco Mix - you probably have all of these ingredients at home already! This blend is perfect for ground beef or turkey, and even on crock pot shredded chicken.
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Herb Blend for Vegetables
Sprinkle this blend over potatoes, carrots, or tomatoes before roasting - and you’ll have a vegetable side dish that’s quick to disappear. Also great on butternut squash, yum!
1 tablespoon thyme
1 tablespoon rosemary
1 ½ teaspoons sage
1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
¾ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon kosher salt
Pumpkin Pie Spice
Who says pumpkin pie spice is just for pie? Sprinkle this blend to your morning yogurt for a daily treat - or add to your chocolate chip cookie recipe for a great fall twist.
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
