Ok, guys. I have totally failed you. According to Punchbowl.com, February 5th is National Chocolate Fondue Day and I’m only now telling you about it. Here’s an opportunity to eat chocolate as your national duty and I’m giving you less than 24 hours notice. Well, for the Love With Food, the Love of God and what not, I apologize. In order to make it up to you, I now declare it National Fondue Week. There. So, we have another 7 days to get down to biz with our favorite flavor.
The good news is that even though most National Holidays require a petition or the support of a political authority, food holidays are democratized. No authority necessary. Perfect! And so is chocolate fondue. The totally democratic dessert-kids, adults, old and young love this sweet interactive yumminess.
And why not? Despite the fancy sounding name (derived from the French word “fondre”, meaning to melt), it takes little to no time to prepare, there’s kind of no way to keep track of serving size and it’s ooey, gooey in all the right ways. Also, unless you really want to use that fondue pot that you received as a wedding gift years ago, you can skip the pomp and circumstance and cook it up in 1-2 minutes in the microwave. So what are you waiting for, Pokey? Holidays like this only come around once a year. (Unless, of course, you decide otherwise!)
Remarkably Easy Chocolate Fondue
12 oz. semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped
½ cup heavy cream
1 pint strawberries, washed and hulled
1 apple, cored and sliced
1 bunch seedless graped, washed
1 pineapple, cored, peeded and cut into bite sized cubes
1 loaf of Brioche or a small poundcake, cubed
a couple of skewers with different colored tips
Pour heavy cream over chocolate in a microwavable bowl and heat for 30 seconds, then stir. Heat for an additional 30 seconds, stir and check if chocolate is totally melted. Continue until it is. Set chocolate bowl on a platter with fruits and cake. Skewer fruits and cake a piece at a time and dip into chocolate. Serves 6-8. (Or if I’m there, maybe 2.)
