There’s been lots of talk about California farming lately, so I thought I’d share the size and impact of California crops so you’ll know what’s growing in the Golden State.
California is responsible for roughly 25% of the nation’s food production. You read that right: California produces a quarter of the US domestic food supply. The bulk of that food is grown in the fertile San Joaquin Valley and along the Central Coast.
Over 200 commodities are grown in California. In addition to the produce I’ve listed here, the state produces dairy products, beef, poultry and many of the nursery plants found throughout the US.
Here’s a few of the Fruits, Vegetables and Nuts grown in California, and the percentage of the total US production that California represents:
Veggies:
- Artichokes: 100%
- Tomatoes: 98%
- Lettuces: 90%
- Avocados: 87%
- Carrots: 80%
- Garlic: 98%
Fruits:
- Walnuts: 99%
- Almonds: 99%
- Pistachios: 98%
Fruits:
- Figs (dried and fresh): 99%
- Pistachios: 98%
- Strawberries: 92%
- Grapes (table, raisin and wine) 90%
California truly feeds the nation. All the foodie love -
