Not so long ago, it was tough finding a restaurant where gluten-free folks could feel safe - or feel like they didn’t have to grill the waiter about the food and feel like a downer. But these days gluten-free restaurants are becoming more and more common, especially in uber-hipster Portland. And we’re not just talking about spots where the kitchen is willing to leave off the bread - these are spots that can make ANYTHING gluten-free. It might just be worth making a pilgrimage to Rip City for these gluten-free restaurants, whether you need it or not.
1. Harlow Restaurant

Yelp: 4.5 stars out of 5, 478 reviews
This spot isn’t just for gluten-free folks: just about any dietary restriction is accommodated here. The breakfast menu really shines at Harlow - the Outlaw Scramble and Mercy Blues are amazeballs. The dairy-free items are guaranteed to fool you, especially the vegan macaroni and cheese.
2. Ground Breaker Brewing

You might think that gluten-free folks wouldn’t be able to partake in the titular offering at this brewery - but you would be oh-so-wrong. Every beer here is gluten-free, and so is the incredible food. We recommend trying them all (okay, maybe not on one night) and a Cubano sandwich. When it comes to gluten-free restaurants, this place covers it all.
3. Brooklyn House Restaurant

If there’s one thing that can easily go wrong for gluten-free folks, it’s gluten-free pasta. Especially pasta cooked in a hurried restaurant kitchen. This is NOT the problem at Brooklyn House Restaurant. The Broccoli Alfredo is a must, and even if you’re not a fan of German food, you gotta try the sauerkraut.

Peruvian food is delicious anytime, but when you don’t have to worry about gluten it’s even better. This spot has a dedicated gluten-free menu, and you might as well just work your way through it. Tapas are never a bad idea like ever, but you can’t miss the ceviche. If you really want a treat, try the Wagyu beef and the panna cotta.
5. A.N.D. Cafe

Pumpkin cheesecake waffles. Fluffy biscuits. Eggs Benedict. ALL gluten-free. Breakfast lovers, feast your eyes and your taste buds. Don’t be surprised if this place haunts your dreams.
6. Teote

The definition of Latin American street food done right, Teote also takes pride in making theirs gluten-free. The plantains might just make you see God - that is, until you try the arepas.
7. Khao San Pearl

Thai food is known to have a lot of naturally gluten-free dishes, but at Khao San the wait staff knows what’s up in case you have any questions. Don’t miss the calamari and the Pad See Ew if you don’t want to regret it forever.
8. Eat Pizza!

There’s a reason why they call this “the best gluten-free pizza in Portland.” It’s because they do their crust oh-so-right. And they offer three sizes, rather than the usual mini size only. All the specialty pizzas are delicious, but the Roma is just right for anyone looking to get flavor without covering up that crust.
9. New Cascadia Traditional

It might be a bakery, but their baked goods aren’t the only thing this spot does well - or does gluten-free. Bread you don’t have to pretend is good, pizza you’ll swear couldn’t be gluten-free, and bagels, glorious bagels. Do yourself a favor and try the French toast.
