The best things in life aren’t free - well, not fat-free. There’s nothing quite like the taste of our favorite foods, but many of those tend to be not so good for those New Year’s resolutions. Luckily with a few simple healthy food switches, you can still eat better without feeling cheated.
1. Sour cream ——-> Greek yogurt
Flickr users Muffet, nina.jsc
All the creamy goodness you love, without the crazy calories.
2. Sugary cocktails ————> Red wine
Flickr user Didriks, ahash.metra
If you’re not giving up entirely on alcohol after whatever happened on New Year’s Eve, just make a pact to stay away from those sugary cocktails. Stick with the classics - wine or beer.
3. Butter ————————> Olive oil
Flickr user Steve A Johnson, StateofIsrael
Sure, olive oil is still high in fat, but it’s much better fat than butter.
4. Regular pasta ————-> whole wheat pasta
Flickr user Beau Maes, YoAmes
Whole grains aren’t always easy to get into your diet every day - so just have them with your favorite pasta recipe.
5. Mayonnaise ————-> mustard
Flickr user Stacy Spensley, WordRidden
Instead of both, stick with just the mustard. Get yourself a special spicy one, and you won’t even miss the mayo.
6. Bagel ——————-> toast
Flickr user Muffet, DaGoaty
Sure, bagels are delicious - but also insanely high-calorie. Next time you’re craving one, go for a piece of toast instead. It’ll still fix that carb craving.
7. Cream sauces ———-> tomato sauce
Flickr users Nikolas Moya, puzzlemaster
Why do people have trouble eating pasta on a diet? Because creamy sauces hide serious fat and calories. This year, try exploring the world of tomato sauce. It doesn’t have to be that boring stuff from a jar.
8. Bread slices ———-> tortilla wraps
Flickr user jeffreyw, WordRidden
Bread is great - but if you’re watching your daily calories, bread steals them fast. Make your next sandwich a wrap instead. You’ll be way less full afterward, trust me.
9. Milk chocolate ——-> dark chocolate
Flickr user Siona Karen, John Loo
Giving up chocolate ENTIRELY is a little extreme, let’s be real. But giving up the sugar and calories in milk chocolate is a lot easier. You might just get hooked on the dark stuff for good.
10. Crackers ————-> apple slices
Flickr user lovelihood, Steve A Johnson
You’ll still get your crunchy fix, with a lot more nutrition in every bite.
11. Nuts ——————-> edamame
Flickr user erix!, cyclonebill
Nuts aren’t exactly UNhealtyhy, but they pack in a lot of fat. If you’re trying to cut back, try a handful of edamame in place of your usual peanuts or mixed nuts.
