The safest way is usually to add about 1" of water with cream of Tartar or baking soda and bring it to a simmer. The heat and soda mixture should release any melted residue from the pan. You may need to slightly scrape with a spatula after the pan has been simmering for a few minutes to remove the tougher stains.
