Story Details

Ever burned a steak? Well... I did once. It was a special occasion. My husband was having his 29th birthday. It was his first birthday we had shared since being married and I wanted it to be special.

I bought two nice juicy steaks and burned them outright. I was just beginning to panic when a wise friend told me to just scrape off as much of the black as I could, put the steaks in a pan, cover them with brown gravy, cover the pan with foil, and steam in the oven for about 30 minutes. It worked... the steaks were the best tasting, most tender steaks ever without the slightest burned flavor.

Then came the cake... you guessed it, I had not been married very long and this was my first double layered cake. I placed the top half on the bottom half before it had time to cool and before I knew it the top layer had broken into three parts. I ran crying to my friend again... "I've ruined the first birthday cake I've ever made him!"

After calming me down she told me to go to the store and buy an extra container of frosting. She instructed me to use the extra frosting and "glue" the pieces together. Then, frost the whole cake like nothing had happened. It worked!

My dear husband would never had known (I don't think) if I hadn't of did some confessing later that night. We both laughed hysterically for what seemed like forever!

This recipe is not the same but from now on, every time I cover steak with any kind of sauce I think of my husband's 29th birthday!

Love the story. We sure can recover from mishaps. I have been cooking nearly 50 years now, and usually can "save" a mistake in the kitchen :)
