Let’s face it: Snacking is one of the great joys in life. At Love With Food we’re big fans. But if you’re trying to be smart about it, it’s more complicated than just noshing whenever you feel like it on whatever’s around.

By timing it right you can take advantage of the times of day when your body uses food the most efficiently to keep you full and focused. Here’s when you should break for snacktime:

Mid-afternoon

This is a big one. You’re already thinking about getting home and having dinner, but there are still hours more to go in the day. Well, you’re not alone. The gap between lunch and dinner is usually pretty long for most people and you need a burst of energy, so go ahead and have a snack. It’ll save you from overeating later, and from getting that tired and annoyed feeling.

Right before bed

Whaaaaat? Everyone’s probably heard that snacking late at night is totally bad for you - but that all depends on what you have.

We’d advise against this.

By the time you’re getting ready for bed it’s probably been several hours since you had dinner, and so a light snack like fruit or popcorn (*cough Buddha Bowl Himalayan Pink Popcorn by Lesser Evil cough*) is the perfect solution. And it’ll help you avoid going to bed hungry, which is no good for trying to get a good night’s sleep.

After a workout

Again, this one might seem counter-intuitive since you just worked off a bunch of calories, but think about it: You’ve just burned a whole bunch of energy. You have to build it back up or you’ll get even more exhausted pretty quickly. That doesn’t give you a pass to down a bowl of ice cream— nom on something that will build your energy back up, like dried fruit or quinoa.
