10 Baking Soda Tips for Your Household and Beauty
You probably have baking soda in your pantry. This inexpensive miracle powder is one of the best inventions. Baking soda is an essential ingredient in baking. The original use of baking soda in dough or batter is to help dough or batter rise, making it light and porous while baking. Not only it’s useful in baking, it’s a multi-tasking ingredient for our everyday life!
1) Tenderize your meat: Rubdown your toughest meat with baking soda. Let it sit for 3-5 hours and then rinse it. Now, you got yourself a super tender piece of meat!
2) Clean your produce: Whether it’s store-bought or homegrown fruits and vegetables, wash them in a pot of cold water with 2-3 tablespoon of baking soda. This helps to clean impurities that water can’t get rid of.
3) Clean your microwave: Got splatter of stains in your microwave? In a microwave-safe bowl, add 2 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 cup of water. Microwave water mixture on high for 2-3 minutes. Remove the bowl and clean the interiors of the microwave with a damp cloth or paper towel.
4) Deodorize your home: Want to get rid of that funky smell, mothball smell, or cigarette odors lingering in your laundry, carpet or upholstery? Freshen smelly laundry by adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle to neutralize and eliminate odors. Sprinkle baking soda on carpet or upholstery and wait 15 minutes before vacuuming it up. It works wonders and a cheap way to get rid of odors without calling the carpet cleaners!
5) Remove yellow stains off your piano keys: Got a piano that still plays well but it’s starting to show it’s age? Remove age stains on your ivories by dissolving 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 litter (33 fl oz) of warm water. Soak a cloth in this mixture and apply it to the keys. Make sure not to let any liquid seep between the keys. Then use another cloth dampened with plain water to wipe the keys again.
6) Keep your pool water clearer: By adding baking soda into the pool, it’s acts as a disinfecting agent which keeps the pool water sparkling clean.
7) Feed your plants: Want healthier and fuller blooms? Shower your alkaline-loving plants like clematis, delphiniums and dianthus occasionally with baking soda solution - 1 tablespoon baking soda dissolved in 2 liters (66 fl oz) water.
8) Wash your face with it: Some facial scrubs and exfoliants can be too harsh on your face or may contain beads that are too rough for the face. Combine some baking soda with raw honey and you’ll find this DIY face wash super refreshing and soothing - and anti-acne too!
9) Spot-treat your acne: Most acne remedy is in a clay form. Make a little paste from baking soda and water. Apply it to your acne spots to help dry it out. It’s not recommended for deep cysts, but for surface afflictions, it’s perfect!
10) Clean your hair: If you are looking for ways to shampoo less or simply want to get rid of product build-up in your hair, dissolve a tablespoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water. Wet your hair in the shower and pour the mixture on your hair. Make sure the mixture coats your hair well before rinsing it out.
